Fantastic film & TV costumes, part I

Hello again!

Like you might have guessed I am on a roll when it comes to blog post series and the latest one is on fantastic film & TV costumes, because lets face it; they are awesome! In this very first post of the series I will be looking at the first film of the Hobbit trilogy, "An Unexpected Journey". The focus will be on the elvish costumes, because the elves are by far my favorite people of Tolkien's Middle-earth.

Through many of Peter Jackson's production videos we've gotten snippets of these costumes, but mostly they've ended up in the background because the focus has been on Bilbo, Gandalf and the dwarves, understandably. But no matter, that's what a keen eye and screen capping is for :) Lately though we have been lucky enough to see official promo pics which show a bit more.

Galadriel
White dress & cape
Being amongst other things called "The White Lady", it is no surprise that Galadriel is mostly dressed in white :) This dress is very much the same style as her wardrobe in the Rings trilogy; simple, ethereal and white. The transparent sleeves are split and almost gives a sense of wings.

Champagne overdress
I can't tell wether it is golden or champagne colored, but either way it is stunning and plays off the only other color in Galadriel's palette; gold. We see it in her hair as well as in her crown, and it fits her perfectly.

Elrond
Brown
As with Galadriel, her son-in-law Elrond's wardrobe is very much in the same vein as in the Rings trilogy. His colors are warm and earthy and the fabrics are rich and lovely. I especially like the detail on this one.

Purple
What a great color! I think Hugo Weaving looks great in this purple shade and I can't wait to see it on-screen.

Thranduil
I don't know about you but I think he is spectacular! To be fair, he looks nothing like the Thranduil I envisioned from reading the book, I had a much more organic look in mind:

"In a great hall with pillars hewn out of the living stone sat the Elvenking on a chair of carven wood. On his head was a crown of berries and red leaves, for the autumn was come again. In the spring he wore a crown of woodland flowers. In his hand he held a carven staff of oak."

- The Hobbit, "Barrels out of bond"

Nevertheless I think he is awesome and fittingly fierce. The cloth of silver is almost otherworldly and even though I find the crown a bit hard to swallow it still resonates with the text above.

Tauriel
Woodland guard uniform
Man! I'm so excited about these pictures :D Tauriel has been such a teaser from PJ's side and now we finally get to see her. As expected her outfit is plain since it is her uniform; her rank is Commander of the King's guard. I see a green tunic, a green corset with lacing in front and brown vambraces. Her hair looks to be reddish brown, but this could be a result of tweaked color settings on the video. Keep in mind that this is Evangeline Lily's stunt double, and not the actress herself; however, it is Tauriel :)

I hope you loved the shots as much as me, and I can't wait until the film is released on December 14th :D Let me know what you think and what your thoughts are about the upcoming "The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey".
